As budget wheels go, you can't go wrong with the Cole Rollen wheelset, especially as they've fallen in price since the test... what more could you ask for?
When we first spotted these wheels, they had been reduced to £142.99.
Now, at the time of writing, they’re down to £120, some 45 per cent off the already very reasonable RRP of £220. So, what’s wrong with them?
Well, all we can assume is that someone at Evans accidentally entered an extra couple of zeros on the order form and they need some warehouse space back.
Having wintered on a range of budget wheelsets over the years — accepting that the skip is imminent after two years at best — I’ve been blown away by the pound-for-pound performance of the Rollen Lites, even if, at 1,870g for the pair, ‘Lites’ is something of a misnomer.
But then these aren’t expensive wheels and, after one of the wettest winters in history, the sealed bearings are still in fine fettle and the spoke tension is still perfect.
Maybe another winter will see more wear, but even if that’s the case, the Rollen Lites are fully rebuildable and all of the parts are readily available from Evans, which is quite incredible at this throwaway price point.
They roll better than I could have imagined and have dealt with the recent proliferation of potholes impeccably. After 2,000 mostly soggy miles, I really can’t find a fault with them. Hell, even the freewheel sounds expensive!
