New event centred around Cardiff on June 14 will include a closed-roads challenge ride and professional road race
A new closed-roads sportive and professional road race will take place on June 14 next year as part of the Velothon Wales two-day cycling festival taking place in and around Cardiff.
The event is being organised by Lagardere, who are responsible for German events Vattenfall Cyclassics and Velothon Berlin. All have the same format of a public mass-participation event preceding a pro road race – also the same format as the RideLondon event.
Lagardere are expecting 10,000 riders to line up for the sportive, which will include 50km or 120km route options. The race will cover a longer route, and will be televised.
The event was first mooted in 2011, but has only now been confirmed on the calendar. The Welsh Assembly has injected funding for the event for the tune of £900,000 over four years.
The event will be part of the UCI Velothon Majors event series, which also includes events in Berlin, Philadelphia and Vienna.
More information can be found on the Velothon Wales website.
