Alejandro Valverde’s palmares is one of the most impressive in modern cycling, yet his involvement in Operacion Puerto has sullied his reputation and left a huge question mark over the whole of his career. The Spaniard avoided sanctions for years until the Spanish authorities were strong-handed in to action.

Much of Valverde’s suspension was backdated, with all his 2010 results negated. He came back to almost the rider he was beforehand. Almost, but not quite. He has steadily improved ever since his return and is still challenging for the Tour de France. His result last year (eighth) was mainly down to losing over nine minutes on stage 13 in the crosswinds.

Movistar showed their faith in Valverde for 2014 (or perhaps the pressure of the sponsor) when they sent Nairo Quintana, the Colombian who finished second in 2013, to the Giro d’Italia this year.
