TECH DEPARTMENT BLOG: 12/5/08
Do you want to feel the excitement from the throbbing hub of Britain's best cycling title? We can provide you with tantalising snippets of stuff you never thought you'd get excited about. This blog will provide the big truth behind the smallest stories.
Beans means… err, Campagnolo!
At the end of the film Casablanca, Humphrey Bogart turns to Ingrid Bergman and says, “Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world”.
How right he was. Certain things are of critical importance in this world - life, love, philosophy, art. Other things are throwaway; Boris Johnson, Britain's Got Talent, or a bag of Fagioli beans from Campagnolo.
Yes, this week we have taken delivery of one of the more bizarre promotional items in recent memory confirming that it is indeed a crazy world. The plot thickened as we carefully opened the box to read another leaflet on top proclaiming “The event is a titbit.” What now? Innuendo and raw beans!
Titbit, you say! Crikey!
We calmed down, read the accompanying literature and were quickly none the wiser. The booklet, enclosed, referred to a special area where these prestigious beans were grown. We were informed about the ancient town of Feltre and how its beans had been prized since ancient times. We can imagine the young Tullio Campagnolo scarfing down a plate, before setting off in the snow inspired, and discovering the quick release.
On the leaflet, highlighted at the bottom, a passage read, “…the Fagioli di Lamon are excellent. But you won't come to eat beans only.” Right, we thought, no one's eating any beans until we've got to the bottom of this. Trouble is Campagnolo won't tell us what the deal is, only that something is going on and that we're invited. Perhaps they are expanding the range of cork screws, heaven knows they could certainly make a smaller version or perhaps they have a Jamie Oliver style cookbook in the offing, only time will tell.
