CW test the Pearl Izumi PRO180 softshell costing £129.99

WITH more softshell, wind and rain resistant panels than other ‘similar in theory' jackets, the 180 served well in particularly cold weather.

The weatherproof fabric wraps around the entire lower arms and around more of the flank than usual so increased core warmth by protecting the kidneys. Other details helped the elements sealing too. Double cuffs mean the inner fabric sits inside a glove while the outer, water proof layer seals the externals.

The pockets have been similarly well thought out. Despite appearing as one large opening, inside the cavity is divided to help organise.

This will keep energy bars edible and your gear protected. It wasn't perfect, however.

Tiny zip pulls are awkward to use and thumb loops can become uncomfortable after extended periods of time. Drawstrings help keep the hem in place, but it's not quite as secure as some and can bunch at the front.

Verdict

All round, for this price, few come close.
