Knowledge is power, a wise old cyclist once said. So when it comes to swotting up on first class fettling and learning your ferrules from your freewheels, we've found seven paper paths to enlightenment

Most people have a Haynes manual at home for their chosen breed of car - for motor vehicles it's considered the go-to reference guide.

The bike version stays up to date with frequent new editions and the crisp photos and succinct steps with large print make it handy to work from directly in the workshop.

Verdict

Unfortunately, trying to encompass the full gamut of bike types is a bit ambitious in this book length, meaning you may need to guess between steps at times.

It's a useful pictorial reference for the basics and the ?spanner' difficulty gauge is handy.

If you have an expensive bike, don't mess around with it, unless you know what you are doing. Knowing tricks for road-side-repairs can be extremely useful, and help get you home.
