Britain’s Becky James won her first senior world title in Minsk yesterday when she beat Germany’s Kristina Vogel in the sprint.
The former junior world champ, who has already won two bronze medals this week, rode with maturity beyond her years to beat Vogel who is a reigning world and Olympic champion.
With each rider having won a round each the gold medal final went to a decider. James had to lead and expertly pinned Vogel to the top of the track to stop the German gaining an advantage by diving down the track.
Vogel got alongside James in the final sprint but the 21-year-old had enough in the tank to hold on to win the gold.
