With more and more women getting into cycling, it’s great to see lots of the biggest bike manufacturers putting more effort into producing high quality women’s bikes that aren’t just a small man’s bike with some pink paint.

The increased number of women’s bikes on the market has meant that we’ve been able to introduce a women’s category into the Cycling Weekly Bike of the Year awards for the first time, looking for the perfect all-rounder that can be all things to all women.

Winner: Cannondale SuperSix EVO

The SuperSix has plenty of pedigree, and this latest model is better than ever with a new carbon lay-up making the frame stiffer and better to ride, while also reducing overall weight.

This is a bike that is great fun to ride, with a stiff asymmetric BB30a bottom bracket that really responds when you chose to put the hammer down.

The slender seat tube and seatstays also help to improve comfort, and the redesign fork means there is enough space for 28mm tyres. Finally the women’s specific saddle and bars mean it’s ready to ride straight out of the box.

Runner Up: Specialized Ruby

specialized ruby women's bike of the year

The Specialized Ruby is the women’s version of the excellent Roubaix, which means it comes with the revolutionary front suspension that helps to improve comfort and handling.

However don’t let that make you think that this is a pure endurance bike, as the stiff bottom bracket and relatively low system weight means that is great for fast riding too.

Thanks to Daniela Reis for modelling in the video, and Volta Pro Tours for their help with filming. If you’d like to know more about our filming and trip and the spectacular locations in Portugal, read the behind the scenes look at our shoot.
