Cavendish and Sir Bradley Wiggins head into the final day in Ghent on Sunday in the overall lead thanks to being a lap up.
However, both pairs in second and third – Kenny De Ketele & Moreno De Pauw and Elia Viviani & Iljo Keisse, respectively – lead the British pair on points.
De Ketele and De Pauw won the recent London Six Day, a result they will be looking to repeat at home in Belgium.
The Ghent Six Day is expected to be Wiggins’s final race, but he has left open the option that he could continue into 2017.
